At SumUp our vision is to be a global leader in the FinTech industry and build a world where small businesses can be successful in doing what they love. To get there, we are putting together a team that is passionate about what they do, committed to one another and to our merchants.
Our boldness, startup mindset, empathy, and love for product foster a creative environment for our employees. We know that a diverse and inclusive workforce keeps us competitive and provides opportunities for all. We believe that together we can help small businesses grow.
The Merchant Growth Tribe’s mission is to build an ecosystem of simple but powerful products and services to help SumUp’s 1.5m+ global merchants grow their businesses. In addition to our core product, the Point-of-Sale (POS) application, the Tribe also develops invoicing and ecommerce services.
Beyond this, we aim to expand SumUp’s product range to cover areas like accounting, marketing, customer loyalty and business analytics. Ultimately, our work strengthens SumUp’s ability to serve the needs of merchants around the world.
On the tech side, we work on a number of different projects that span technologies, systems, and processes. A few of the technologies we're leveraging at SumUp include Golang, Java, Kotlin, AWS, Docker, Kubernetes, Redis, Prometheus, Postgres.
You'll fit in perfectly to our team if:
You have a strong philosophy on testing and use this mindset to write robust, maintainable code.
You strive for clean code, and also know when and which shortcuts are appropriate and which are not.
You know how to make pragmatic programming decisions in a complex codebase.
You enjoy sharing your knowledge with others, whether it's through mentorship, pair programming, or whiteboard design sessions.
You want to be part of shaping the product and having a direct impact on the business.
You take the time to listen to others and understand their point of view.
You find it exciting to work in a high-growth environment with both immediate challenges as well as massive potential.

Hundreds of thousands of small businesses rely on SumUp to drive their business. Your job is to build sustainable, performant, and secure backend solutions that enhance the broader SumUp platform. Here are some of the things you'll be doing at SumUp:
Develop features that impact our merchants' daily lives as part of a small, autonomous cross-functional team.
Take end-to-end ownership over what you build: from concept to creation, testing, documentation, deployment, monitoring, maintenance, and enhancement over time.
Participate in designing and planning feature implementation, as well as advocating for removing tech debt, fixing bugs, refactoring, and making iterative improvements.
Write meaningful tests that give you the confidence to release at any time.
Become an expert in the business domain your software touches.
Work with engineers who are both more senior and more junior than you, and experience both being mentored and mentoring others.
Don't be concerned if you do not meet 100% of the requirements. We are looking for the best overall team member.
Strong Computer Science fundamentals (though a formal degree is not required).
Solid understanding of design principles, data-modeling, and designing clear and predictable REST APIs.
Extensive experience with relational databases, preferably Postgres.
Exposure to working with Spring Boot, a strong plus.
Experience or interest in DevOps topics, such as working with AWS, Docker, Kubernetes, and/or Jenkins.
Mindset towards scalability and resilience without overengineering based on current challenges.
Open to learning different tools, frameworks, and languages to get the job done.
3+ years of experience in either Java, Kotlin or Golang.
A dedicated annual budget for attending conferences and advancing your career through further education. We encourage you to speak at conferences and give talks.
Weekly Lunch and Learn session, where the local engineering team exchanges ideas over company-sponsored lunch.
Dedicated time every week for side-projects and open source initiatives.
Semi-annual offsites, where the engineering teams from Berlin, Cologne, Sofia, and São Paulo gather together.
We have a close, welcoming and international community. We get together regularly for brunches, cocktail nights, football, office events, AMA sessions, training, German classes, and yoga classes.
Numerous other benefits such as Urban Sports Club subsidy, Corporate Pension Scheme, Kita placement assistance, relocation assistance, 2x per week subsidized office lunches and a gorgeous place to work in the heart of Berlin at Alexanderplatz.
