Backend Architect

In this job you will work with several small, cross-functional engineering teams on our Merchant Acquisition Platform to help them make good architectural and technology decisions and ensure an eCommerce platform that will enable both technical and organizational scalability for the future. Our Merchant Acquisition teams develop market-facing features, powering our marketing website, our online shop and partner portal, as well as our global logistics fulfillment solution. We strive for end-to-end ownership in our cross-functional teams and have a passion to deliver quality software. You will be working alongside the engineering teams, enable them to be successful and help our engineers to reach their full potential. By providing technical coaching, establishing architectural patterns and engineering best practices you will help support our engineers to reach mastery of their technical skills and develop new competencies to advance their personal growth. 

On the tech side, we work on a number of different projects that span technologies, systems, and processes. A few of the technologies we're leveraging at SumUp include **GoLang, Ruby/RoR, React, Webpack, GraphQL, Apollo, Jest, Enzyme, Storybook, Next.js, Emotion, NodeJS, PostgreSQL, AWS, Kubernetes & Docker.

Your daily activities will include:

  • Be a technical leader for our Merchant Acquisition teams by setting the technical vision for the Merchant Acquisition Platform at SumUp and drive its adoption, including test strategy, architecture, best practices and coding standards.

  • Collaborate with engineering managers and other tech leaders on best practices and cross-cutting engineering concerns.

  • Focus your efforts on building or improving technical foundations that support quality, stability, and efficient parallel development.

  • Write and maintain clear and understandable engineering artifacts (designs, documentation).

  • Collaborate closely with the developers who are using what you build on a daily basis to gather input and create a strong feedback loop where they can also contribute.

  • Coordinate with your peers in Product, QA, and Operations to successfully deliver impactful cross-team projects.

  • Work on projects ranging from UI (e.g. our design system) to application-level tools (e.g. monitoring and tracking libraries) to cross-cutting architectural implementation (e.g. independent deployment of micro-frontends).

  • Participate in hiring and on-boarding of engineers.

  • Foster and improve engineering practices and techniques like TDD, pair programming and DDD

  • Coach engineers in designing and planning feature implementations using your experience in breaking larger problems into smaller more easily distributable problems/solutions.

  • Provide design feedback to enable team autonomy and a scalable and maintainable code base.

Your profile:

  • You understand the importance of cross-functional team spirit vs. traditional expert-based organizations.

  • You have a solid CS background and experience in designing and building large enterprise software systems (distributed system is a plus).

  • The ideal candidate has built and/or worked with large internationalized eCommerce implementations and is familiar with payments, vouchers/promotions, order management and order fulfillment.

  • You are self-motivated and proactive with great english communication skills.

  • You understand fundamental design principles, data modeling and API design.

  • You have 7+ years of experience in programming ideally in Go, Ruby, Java, JavaScript, Swift (any combination).

  • You have experience with a relational database, preferably PostgreSQL.

  • You were exposed to microservices, containers and relevant runtimes.

  • Solid debugging, optimisation and problem-solving skills.
