Compliance Specialist

Currently we are recruiting for an experienced and self-motivated Compliance Specialist to work with our Compliance and Legal Department across the SumUp Group, based in a large office in Sofia, Bulgaria. We are an English speaking organisation and therefore fluent written/verbal English is required. This role is responsible for ensuring that you safeguard our reputation at all times, particularly in the areas of Data Protection, Marketing and Advertising standards, as well as payment organisation compliance requirements generally.

As this person will be a lead compliance expert based in our office in Sofia, they must possess very good communication skills and able to clearly outline responses and requirements to any and all business queries. Some business travel will be required.


  • Serve as the principal on-site resource for business compliance queries, disseminating information throughout the Compliance team and business units as required

  • Ensure all compliance policies and procedures are kept up-to-date and that new procedures are implemented where necessary

  • The creation and production of relevant compliance related management information (MI), including reports for senior management as required

  • Ensure adequate training and understanding of data protection laws across the Group and implement additional training, policies and procedures as required

  • Conducting internal investigations and enquiries as necessary, and maintaining logs

  • Primary point of contact on all data protection matters and report directly to the DPO

  • Liaise with the marketing and advertising teams, as well as others, to ensure continued compliance with data, advertising and marketing legal and compliance requirements

  • Inform compliance colleagues and the business (as required) of any compliance related issues, concerns, or contacts by regulatory agencies and or any other authorised/relevant bodies

  • Identify process/control weaknesses and raise issues and associated actions, where required. This will involve notifying responsible owners and providing sufficient oversight to ensure the issue is managed to completion

  • Acting as the Compliance representative for the Branch and providing support and advice on regulatory change to the business

  • Participating in additional projects and assisting with any other matters as directed by the EU Compliance management team

  • Must be willing to travel as required


  • You have qualification in compliance/legal studies, with Data Protection qualification advantageous

  • 5+ years Compliance experience in a similar or related field, with GDPR experience advantageous

  • High degree of professional ethics and integrity

  • You are organised, analytical, pragmatic, solution orientated and ability to prioritise and execute projects in an ever-changing environment

  • Have ability to work on own initiative, strong attention to detail and able to manage time effectively

  • You have sound judgement and ability to analyse situations and information quickly

  • Ability to identify material issues and know when to escalate them

  • Ability to prioritise effectively and manage ongoing work with ad hoc projects, and deal with a variable workload

  • Excellent computer skills, use of online resources, etc.

  • Outstanding interpersonal & communication skills, both written and verbal. This role requires fluent English
