Backend Software Engineer

Location: Berlin, in-office 

We’re looking for a versatile Software Engineer to support us on launching and scaling SumUp in new markets. Our team is in charge of acquirer integration, onboarding and Reconciliation related topics for existing and new markets.

We leverage products built within SumUp, crafting new features and adding integrations to provide merchants with the best transaction experience.

As part of this cross-functional squad within Global Expansion tribe, you will collaborate with other teams and to different codebases to deliver the functionalities required in the new countries. We believe that small merchants all over the world deserve to have a key partner to help them grow their business and our squad enables SumUp to be there for them. You will also build tools to enable faster market launches.

What you’ll do

  • Design, build and maintain back-end services between distributed systems

  • Actively participate in code reviews with other software engineers

  • Participate in product development, collaborating with engineers in different tech stacks to deliver business value

  • Maintain and extend the core payments and internal tooling systems, responsible for the transaction flow for different payment methods and help agents to provide better support

  • Participate in API design and implementation for both internal APIs and those exposed to our third-party integrators

  • Foster a culture of pair programming and amazingly run monitoring and alerting for our products

You’ll be great for this role if you have

  • You are a generalist who likes to touch and learn multiple technologies 

  • You have good knowledge of Golang and experience in writing production level applications in at least one of these technologies: Go and/or Kotlin/JVM

  • You have a DevOps mindset and know how to set up CI/CD and know how to operate and deploy with Kubernetes (incl. Helm charts)

  • You are used to Pair- or Mob programming and enjoy working in a collaborative environment

  • You have a good understanding of software architecture and application design

  • You have good English communication skills, both spoken and written

  • You have experience with distributed and fault-tolerant systems

  • You have a passion for clean, maintainable and testable code

  • You value team over individuals and autonomy within your team
