About the team:

At SumUp, we are building innovative solutions to support small merchants in starting, running, and scaling their businesses. We offer a diverse range of products that integrate seamlessly into our users' lives by pushing the boundaries of financial technology. From concept to deployment, you will play a key role in shaping the future of our products.

We are the risk-taking squad, safeguarding our platform and customers by anticipating, preventing, and mitigating fraud and AML threats across the entire merchant journey.

You will lead a squad of engineers building and supporting SumUp Risk & Compliance Merchant Protect services. Scale, throughput, and high availability are key considerations for the software we build. We aim to create global and reusable services that can be easily extended and adopted in new markets.

You will work with the Product Manager to define objectives and key results (OKRs), lead the squad’s technical delivery, get hands-on with technical designs and code reviews, provide people management to the engineers, and ensure the squad’s operational excellence practices deliver an excellent merchant experience. Our technology stack is modern, cloud-native (AWS), and microservice-based (Docker, K8s), written in Go.

You will have the opportunity to work as part of a global team, as SumUp has offices and engineers in various locations across Europe and Latin America.

What you’ll do:

  • Lead a squad of engineers to develop and support SumUp Risk & Compliance Merchant Protect services, ensuring scalability, throughput, and high availability.

  • Define OKRs with the Product Manager, leading technical delivery, participating in technical designs, and conducting code reviews.

  • Mentor and manage engineers, fostering a collaborative and innovative team environment while maintaining high standards of performance and reliability.

  • Influence software architecture within the team and help coordinate dependencies with other teams. Advocate for the company’s strategic vision on the wider platform.

  • Embrace and promote a hands-on culture, underpinned by high levels of observability and a “build-it support-it” mindset.

  • Use regular 1:1s to manage performance and guide your team through their career development and best use of their personal and development skills.

  • Engage and improve our engineering culture by leading team strengthening activities, such as offsites, hackathons, cross-team projects, and knowledge sharing sessions.

  • Ensure the squad's operational excellence practices contribute to an exceptional merchant experience.

  • Collaborate globally with offices and engineers across Europe and Latin America, building strong relationships with stakeholders and technical leaders within the Risk and Compliance tribe.

  • Contribute to the Risk & Compliance tribe steering group, working with senior engineering leaders to shape and deliver the tribe’s vision.

You’ll be a great fit for this role if you have:

  • Minimum of 2 years leading a team of 4-7 engineers/data scientists as an Engineering Manager (ideally 3+ years of experience).

  • Experience to collaboratively work with the product manager to make the right trade-offs and plan quarterly/yearly goals of the squad

  • Excellent stakeholder management experience in the wider business and with technical leaders (Staff Engineers , other EMs, VP Engineering)

  • A solid track record in designing, implementing, monitoring, and scaling web apps and APIs, preferably using Go.

  • Experience leading cross-functional teams of diverse engineers.

  • Experience with a modern, cloud-native backend language (AWS), deployed with container orchestration.

  • Strong knowledge of databases and distributed systems (relational databases).

  • A strong technical background, enabling effective discussion of technical concepts, architectures, and trade-offs with engineering teams.

  • The ability to conduct deep dives with an analytical and metrics-driven mindset.
