Senior Backend Engineer - Merchant Bank, Engagement

Berlin, Germany · Engineering

Our mission is to help our customers utilize the SumUp Bank as quickly and smoothly as possible. We’re responsible for a broad range of topics such as onboarding, KYC services, and strong customer authentication.

We’re moving from our Elixir-based monolithic card issuing platform to Java/Kotlin and will need experienced backend engineers to take this over. If Microservices and Event-Driven systems are something that you enjoy along with complex Domain-Driven Design challenges, we’d love to hear from you.

As a Senior Backend Engineer in the Merchant Bank Tribe, you’ll be part of the team building SumUp's own digital bank. You’ll be part of a local, autonomous, cross-functional team that can take an aspect of our product and perfect it from concept to execution.

What you’ll do

  • Design, implement and iteratively create back-end services

  • Maintain and evolve the team core services

  • Participate in API design and implementation for both internal APIs and those exposed to our third-party integrators

  • Help your team deliver business value by taking decisions related to the back-end and actively participate in product discussions and code reviews with other engineers

  • Provide comprehensive documentation, good test coverage, and improve code quality

  • Collaborate with other software developers, QA and DevOps engineers to ensure smooth deployment, continuous integration and support for the software we deliver

You’ll be great for this role if

  • You have 5+ years of experience as a back-end engineer.

  • You have relevant experience with JVM-based programming languages.

  • You have experience with distributed and fault-tolerant systems.

  • You’re familiar with Spring, Micronaut, or another web MVC framework.

  • You have a passion for clean, maintainable, and testable code.

  • You understand fundamental system architecture, design principles, data modeling, and API design.

  • You have great verbal and written English communication skills.

Why you should join SumUp

  • We’re a truly global team of 2000+ people from 60+ countries, spread across 3 continents.

  • You'll attend global offsites and regular team events.

  • You’ll receive a budget for attending conferences and external training.

  • We offer a corporate pension scheme, 28 days’ paid leave, free German and yoga classes, subsidized Urban Sports Club membership and other great benefits.
