Elixir Software Engineer - Card Issuing

The mission of the Card Issuing squad is to create a globally accepted card which solves the daily challenges small business owners face everyday. Thanks to it our merchants are not only provided with instant access to their funds, but also have a full and transparent overview of their transactions. And this is just the beginning! We are planning many new exciting features and that’s why we are looking for a motivated and creative Elixir Engineer to join our team.

As an Elixir Engineer you will be a part of a cross-functional squad and have the chance to participate in building a completely new product from the ground up. We will encourage you to collaborate in the whole development and decision making process - you will be participating in brainstorming sessions with the team and transforming your ideas into features that empower small merchants across the globe.   • Design, implement, and iteratively improve backend services in Elixir

  • Maintain and extend the card issuing system, responsible for the issuing and management of the SumUp card written in Elixir

  • Participate in API design and implementation for both internal APIs and those exposed to our third-party integrators

  • Help your team to deliver business value by taking decisions related to backend and actively participating in the product discussions

  • Provide good test coverage, and improve code quality

  • Collaborate with other software developers, QA and devops engineers to ensure smooth deployment, continuous integration, and support for the software that we deliver

  • Actively participate in code reviews with other software engineers


  • You have previous experience as a backend engineer 

  • You have relevant experience with Elixir and OTP (whether in a production environment or from pet projects)

  • You have a good understanding of software architecture and application design

  • You have experience with distributed and fault tolerant systems

  • You have a passion for clean, maintainable and testable code

  • You value team over individuals and autonomy within your team

  • You are transparent and enjoy working with the people around you

  • You are proactive and able to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment


  • Are active in the Elixir community, contribute to open source or have personal projects

  • Enjoy mentoring fellow engineers and love sharing knowledge

  • Worked in an international, distributed team

  • Have experience with Docker and/or Kubernetes

  • Feel comfortable with Unix/Linux environments
