The Payments Tribe (60 people within the global engineering team of 700+), is at the core of SumUp’s global business, building and maintaining the systems that process billions of transactions annually for millions of merchants across 36+ countries. 

We are a cross-functional autonomous team of engineers, product managers and data analysts who design, build, and maintain cutting-edge solutions. We focus on event-driven microservices architecture, scalability, and high availability.

ABOUT THE ROLE

This role provides opportunities to work on diverse challenges while being guided by experienced mentors, helping you grow into a well-rounded software engineer. You’ll join an office-first culture, where we value in-person collaboration. 

You'll learn to write clean, maintainable, and testable code, build scalable systems, enhance software quality, troubleshoot and debug, focus on security and reliability, support DevOps practices, and create clear documentation among others.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

  • Academic experience, personal projects or professional experience in backend programming, preferably with Golang or Java (but others are ok, too: Python/JS/ C++/Elixir/Ruby, etc).

  • Familiarity with SQL and/or NoSQL storages such as CockroachDB, PostgreSQL or Kafka.

  • Exposure to RESTful APIs development and consumption.

  • Eagerness to gain foundational understanding of system architecture, software design principles, and data modeling.

  • Ability to identify and address simple code inefficiencies with minimal guidance.

  • Motivated to solve software engineering problems that deliver business value.

  • A passion for learning and improving technical skills through collaboration and feedback.

  • Full-time commitment - a minimum of 6hrs/day availability (30 hrs per week), ideally 8hrs/day (40 hours a week)
