Senior Software Engineer (Kotlin, Java) - Digital Bank, Core Banking

The mission of the Merchant Bank Tribe at SumUp is to create a service which solves the challenges small business owners face every day, providing them with secure instant access to their funds and a transparent overview of their transactions. And this is just the beginning! 

We started with mPOS 7 years ago and now our portfolio includes invoicing, P2P, debit card, e-commerce and other card not present solutions that are still in the oven.

Banking services is a new domain in our ever growing ecosystem. It extends our product portfolio allowing small and medium-sized businesses to operate end to end on a single platform.

As a Senior Software Engineer in the Merchant Bank Tribe, you’ll be part of the team which builds SumUp's own digital bank to make our customers more successful in what they like doing. 

You’ll be part of a local, autonomous, cross-functional team that can take an aspect of our product and perfect it from concept to execution.

What you'll be doing

  • Design, implement, and iteratively improve back-end services

  • Maintain and evolve the core banking system

  • Participate in API design and implementation for both internal APIs and those exposed to our third-party integrators

  • Help your team to deliver business value by taking decisions related to back-end and actively participating in the product discussions

  • Provide comprehensive documentation, good test coverage, and improve code quality

  • Collaborate with other software developers, QA and DevOps engineers to ensure smooth deployment, continuous integration, and support for the software that we deliver

  • Actively participate in code reviews with other software engineers

You'll be a great fit for this position if

  • You have previous experience as a back-end engineer 

  • You have relevant experience with JVM based programming languages

  • You have a good understanding of software architecture and application design

  • You have experience with distributed and fault tolerant systems

  • You are familiar with Spring or another web MVC framework

  • You have a passion for clean, maintainable and testable code

  • You value team over individuals and autonomy within your team

  • You are open-minded, transparent and a team player, transparent and enjoy working with the people around you

  • You are proactive and able to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment

Awesome if you

  • Are active in the Dev community, contribute to open source or have personal projects

  • Enjoy mentoring fellow engineers and love sharing knowledge

  • Have experience with Docker and/or Kubernetes

  • Feel comfortable with Unix/Linux environments
