Cookies, Web Beacons, and Similar Technologies

Last Updated: May 7, 2020

This Cookie Policy (“Cookie Policy”) describes how SumUp, Inc. and our U.S. affiliates and subsidiaries (collectively, “SumUp,” “us,” “we,” or “our”), our service providers and our third party partners use cookies, web beacons, and other similar technologies in connection with our website at www.sumup.com and any other websites or digital properties that we operate and that post a link to this Cookie Policy (collectively, the “Site”), our mobile applications (collectively, the “App”), and our services, tools, and messaging (together with the Site and the App, the “Services”).

What are cookies, web beacons, and similar technologies?

Cookies – Small text files (typically made up of letters and numbers) that websites store on a visitor’s device to uniquely identify the visitor’s browser or to store information or settings in the browser.  Cookies serve a variety of functions, like enabling us to remember certain information you provide to us as you navigate between pages on the Site.  There are several types of cookies:

Session cookies expire at the end of your browser session and allow us to link your actions during that particular browser session. Persistent cookies are stored on your device in between browser sessions, allowing us to remember your preferences or actions across multiple sites. First-party cookies are set by the site you are visiting. Third-party cookies are set by a third party site separate from the site you are visiting.

Web beacons – Small graphic images (also known as “pixel tags” or “clear GIFs”) that are typically used to demonstrate that a webpage or email was accessed or opened, or that certain content was viewed or clicked.  We may use web beacons on the Services to compile statistics about usage of websites and the success of our marketing campaigns.

Flash Cookies – Technologies that store more information in your browser or device than cookies (also known as locally-stored objects), that are used on websites for purposes similar to cookies.

We may use the terms “cookies” or “similar technologies” interchangeably in our policies to refer to all technologies that we may use to store data in your browser or device or that facilitate our automatic collection of personal information or help us identify you in the manner described above.

Why do we use cookies, web beacons, and similar technologies?

Generally, we use these technologies for several reasons, such as letting you navigate between pages efficiently, remembering your preferences, remembering your username and password, enabling you to keep items in your shopping cart, letting us analyze how well our website is performing, and improving your experience.  Some cookies are required for technical reasons in order for our Services to operate.  Other cookies enable us and the third parties we work with to track and target the interests of visitors to our Site.  For example, we use cookies to tailor content and information that we may send or display to you and otherwise personalize your experience while interacting with our Services and to otherwise improve the functionality of the Services.  Finally, third parties serve cookies through our Services for advertising, analytics, and other purposes.  This is described in more detail below.

What cookies do we use?

Essential. These cookies are necessary to the operation of our Services and to use certain features, such as technologies that allow you access to our Services, identify irregular site behavior, prevent fraudulent activity and improve security, or that allow you to make use of our functions such as shopping carts, saved search, or similar functions.  Because these cookies are strictly necessary to deliver the Services, you cannot refuse them without impacting how our Services function.  You may be able to block or delete essential cookies by changing your browser settings.

How do I manage cookies, web beacons, and similar technologies?

You can remove or disable cookies via your browser by referring to your browser's configuration documentation, since the steps for doing so are usually browser-specific.  Removing or disabling cookies might adversely impact your ability to use our Services effectively.  Enabling cookies ensures a smoother experience when you use our Services.  For more information about cookies, including how to see what cookies have been set on your browser and how to manage and delete them, visit www.allaboutcookies.org.

We may use third parties, such as advertising networks and exchanges, to allow us to serve you advertisements. These third-party ad networks and exchange providers may use third-party cookies, web beacons, or similar technologies to collect information about your visit to our site and elsewhere on the Internet. They may also collect your device identifier, IP address, or identifier for advertising (IDFA). The information that these third parties collect may be used to provide you with more relevant advertising on our sites or elsewhere on the web.

Most advertising networks offer you a way to opt out of Interest Based Advertising. You can obtain more information about these companies' information collection practices and opt-out of receiving interest-based advertising from partners that are subject to the Self-Regulatory Principles for Online Behavioral Advertising published by the Digital Advertising Alliance or that participate in the Network Advertising Initiative. You can also limit collection of your information for interest-based ads by blocking third party cookies in your browser settings or using privacy plug-ins or ad blocking software that help you block third party cookies. In addition, your mobile device settings may provide functionality to limit use of the advertising ID associated with your mobile device for targeted online advertising purposes. If you opt-out of interest-based advertisements, you will still see advertisements online but they may be less relevant to you. Please note that we also may work with companies that offer their own opt-out mechanisms or do not participate in the opt-out mechanisms described above. Even after using these opt-out mechanisms, you may receive interest-based advertising from other companies.
