The crisis in Ukraine: Our response
Like millions around the globe, we at SumUp are utterly heartbroken by the war in Ukraine and the humanitarian crisis currently unfolding there.
Over two million people have now been forced to flee their homes and seek refuge in neighbouring countries, sparking the biggest movement of people in Europe since the Second World War.
From the outset, our main concern has been ensuring the safety of our colleagues in Ukraine and their loved ones. With two offices in the country – one in Kyiv and one in Kharkiv – we have, in total, 34 colleagues whose lives have been directly impacted by the conflict, and many more Ukrainian team members in other locations who are worried for their families back home.
Given the urgency of the situation, we first offered to relocate our team – together with their families – in Kyiv and Kharkiv to nearby countries or safer cities within Ukraine, and this process is still ongoing. While our male colleagues are currently prevented from leaving the country, some female colleagues have managed to leave and we are providing assistance and transportation to family members, too.
We have also started donation drives in several of our offices, collecting food, clothing and basic supplies for those in need. SumUppers have also been offering up accommodation, transport, translations and legal support to help out in any way they can.
Together, we’ve already achieved a lot and we will stand by our colleagues and those affected by this war in the weeks to come.
SumUp pledges to match donations up to €1 million
The magnitude of the humanitarian crisis in and around Ukraine beggars belief. More than two million people have been displaced by the war, and millions more have had their lives torn apart. Women and children have been on the road for days, and the fear and exhaustion they’re experiencing is inconceivable. As Ukrainians try to find safety, they need our help more than ever—and we’re doing as much as we can to support those in need.
SumUp is therefore raising money for the Red Cross and pledges to match all donations, big and small, in March until we reach our goal of €1 million.
100% of the funds will be sent to the Red Cross and used to provide shelter, food, water and medical support to vulnerable people.
We’re incredibly grateful to those who have already donated through our Red Cross appeal. Your donations will help offer much-needed support to those affected by this devastating crisis. Let’s stand together for Ukraine and for peace.
