Set Up Your SumUp Plus Card Reader

The SumUp Plus is the perfect 3-in-1 card reader for growing businesses. With the SumUp Plus, you can use the free SumUp App on your smartphone or tablet to accept payments. You can identify the SumUp Plus (pictured above) by the OLED display and keypad on the front panel and the SumUp logo in the bottom right-hand corner.

Before setting up your card reader, make sure you have already activated your profile with an SMS verification!

If this is your first SumUp Card Reader...

  1. Open and sign into the app, and you will see the Checkout screen. Type in $1.00 on the keypad, and press "Charge". Select “Card Reader” as your payment method. Your device will then start to scan for the card reader and once found, the reader will turn on automatically and the blue lights will begin to blink.

  2. Confirm the pairing request on your smartphone or tablet by comparing the last 3 digits that are shown on your screen with the last 3 digits of your card reader’s serial number. (This can be located on the back of your card reader). Tap “Connect”. Simply confirm the Bluetooth connection by pressing the green checkmark on your app screen, and you have successfully connected!

  3. You can then insert, tap or swipe your card to start the test transaction itself. Once the transaction is complete, you’ll be given the option to send a receipt. Please note that the $1.00 test transaction will be processed, so you can either refund the transaction or allow it to go through to test the payout timeline.

If you’re adding a new SumUp Plus Card Reader to an existing account...

  1. Open the SumUp App and log-in using your email address and password

  2. On iOS: Select the More tab from the bottom navigation menu, then select “Payment methods” underneath the Profile section // On Android: Select the menu symbol in the top left corner, then select “Payment methods”

  3. Underneath Card Reader, tap to “Air” to start the set up. Your device will then start to scan for the card reader and once found, the reader will turn on automatically and the blue lights will begin to blink.

  4. Confirm the pairing request on your smartphone or tablet by comparing the last 3 digits that are shown on your screen with the last 3 digits of your card reader’s serial number. (This can be located on the back of your card reader). Tap “Connect”. Simply confirm the Bluetooth connection by pressing the green check mark and you have successfully connected!

  5. Pairing successful! The card reader will now sync your account information. The process takes about 2 minutes. Once complete, you can accept card payments as usual.

Set Up Your SumUp Pro Card Reader

The SumUp Pro is a standalone card reader, which means there’s no need for an additional smartphone or tablet to accept card payments. It accepts chip and contactless payments, works on both WiFi and cellular data, and includes a built-in SIM card and free unlimited mobile data.

Before setting up your card reader, make sure you’ve completed your account registration.

  1. Turn on the device by long pressing the power button on the top right corner of the keypad.

  2. Select your preferred language for the device, then press the green checkmark button in the lower right-hand corner.

    1. Note: You can change your preferred language any time by selecting “Device Settings,” then “Change Language.”

  3. Choose to connect to a WiFi network, or skip this step to establish a cellular data connection.

  4. Login to your SumUp Account by typing your credentials on the touchscreen of the device. You can use the buttons on the keypad to enter numbers.

  5. Enter an amount (minimum of $1.00) and click the green checkmark to confirm your test transaction with the reader. You can then insert, or tap your card to complete the test transaction itself. Once the transaction is complete, the screen will read “Approved”.

  6. All set! You’re now ready to start accepting card payments with your SumUp Pro Card Reader!

As a reminder, you do not need to connect your card reader to the SumUp App to accept payments. As long as you’re logged into your SumUp Pro Card Reader with your same SumUp Account credentials, all transactions made on the SumUp Pro will automatically be visible in the “Sales'' tab of your SumUp Dashboard. You can, however, still use the SumUp App to track your sales or use remote payments (for eligible business types).

Card Reader Troubleshooting

SumUp Plus

If you’re having issues connecting to your SumUp Plus Card Reader, please try the following:

  • Please check if your smartphone/tablet meets the SumUp Plus Requirements

  • Restart your smartphone/tablet to restart your Bluetooth chip.

  • Check if an update of the SumUp App is available in the Apple App Store or Google Play Store

  • Please check in the settings of your smartphone/tablet to see if there’s an update available for your operating system. If yes, we recommend installing it and try the set up again.

SumUp Pro

If you’re having issues connecting your SumUp Pro Card Reader, please try the following:

  • Check and make sure your WiFi or cellular data connection is stable.

  • Restart the device by holding the power button down for 4 seconds, or until the 4 green LEDs turn off. Wait a few seconds and then turn the device on again. Note: After the device is turned off, it will need to reconnect to the cellular network once it’s turned on again.

  • Check to see if the device is charged at least 25% or higher. We recommend charging the device on a monthly basis.

  • Change your location. Open areas and windows are ideal for connection.

Payment methods

Which cards are accepted?

SumUp accepts any credit or debit card that displays a Visa, American Express, Diners, Discover, or MasterCard logo.

How are the cards read?

To accept chip cards on the SumUp Plus, please insert the chip (front of card with chip facing you) into the slot at the top of the reader. To accept a card via magnetic stripe, please swipe the card (back facing you) through the bigger slot at the top of the reader.

To accept chip cards on the SumUp Pro, please insert the chip (front of the card with chip facing you) into the slot at the bottom of the reader. Please note that the SumUp Pro cannot process magnetic stripe (swipe) cards.

You can also accept NFC payments via Google and Apple Pay with both SumUp Card Readers. To accept a contactless transaction, please tap the card for 1-2 seconds flat in front of the display of the reader.

How does the customer authorize the payment?

With the SumUp Plus, all they’ll have to do is provide their signature in the SumUp App on the display of the smartphone or tablet.

With the SumUp Pro, your customer will authorize the payment by providing their signature on the touchscreen display of the device.

Charging the SumUp Plus Card Reader

You can charge your card reader using the Micro USB cable included in the package. Just plug the cable to your computer or with a power supply, and connect the other end into the bottom of your card reader.

The SumUp Plus can process about 500 transactions with a fully charged device. Don’t forget, you can still use your SumUp reader while it’s charging, either with the cable or the printer bundle.

Charging the SumUp Pro Card Reader:

You can charge your card reader by using the USB Type C cable included in the SumUp Pro packaging. Simply plug the cable into your computer or a power supply (i.e. wall charging block) and connect the other end in the charging port at the bottom of your card reader.

The SumUp Pro can process approximately 50 transactions on a full charge. Don’t forget, you can still process transactions while your SumUp Card Reader is charging!

General handling

  • SumUp Card Readers are designed to work in temperatures between 14°F and +113°F. Therefore we don’t recommend leaving your card reader outside over a long period of time.

  • Even when you don’t use your card reader on a regular basis, we recommend charging it once per month.

  • The card reader is designed with security sensors to protect it from manipulation and tampering. For this reason, always handle your card reader carefully. Be sure to avoid using the device with force or impact (e.g. dropping it on the ground or knocking it across the table) to prevent the automatic security lock from being enabled. Once this lock is triggered, the card reader is permanently locked and can no longer be used.

  • Please always ensure you’re not using the card reader on metal or magnetic surfaces. The device has a security feature that prevents any unauthorized reading of magnetic card strips on credit and debit cards—so when the device is placed on or near a metal surface, this can cause the card reader to automatically decline the payment.
